3D printing achieves self-assembly and strongly impacts traditional industries

Bricks have been used by humans for thousands of years as a basic building material. Recently, a group of Israeli scientists have used it to make an article. After special treatment of bricks, these bricks can be transformed into large 3D objects by high-frequency vibration. The results of this research may have an important impact on areas such as product manufacturing and construction in the long run.

The study was conducted by a group of researchers led by Dr. Ido Bachelet from the Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. They developed a system that allows for self-assembly of materials through prior programming. To this end, in Nature, a book called "Meshing complex macro-scale objects into self-assembling bricks" was published.

The so-called self-assembly refers to a technique in which basic structural units (molecules, nanomaterials, micro- or larger-scale materials) spontaneously form an ordered structure. “Self-assembly and self-organization is one of the most peculiar and most puzzling phenomena in nature.” Researchers at the beginning of their paper say, “They are ubiquitous: proteins, viruses, living cells, multicellular organisms, populations, and even society. Etc. All of these systems are composed of independent parts that interact with each other in a specific way, eventually forming a unified structure or pattern."

It is understood that the researchers' ideas are mainly inspired by DNA origami, a technique often used in the laboratory to make various nanoscale structures. But they use new algorithms that allow them to be self-assembled on a macro scale, such as objects like bricks.
