After the newly revised Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) came into effect, many domestic redwood species have become increasingly restricted due to export bans and trade limitations imposed by exporting countries. As a result, prices have remained high. However, since the start of this month, there has been a noticeable increase in the supply of mahogany, leading to a sharp decline in its price. Despite this, many timber merchants are beginning to realize that the instability of redwood resources and fluctuating prices could negatively impact their businesses. Consequently, their focus is no longer solely on mahogany, and they are exploring alternative materials. Among these, Mexican wood has gained attention from many domestic traders.
Mexican Black Rosewood
Mexico is known for its vast territory and rich forest resources, with 139 million hectares of forest covering 70.4% of the country’s land area. Due to its unique geographical location and favorable climate, Mexico's forests boast a wide variety of tree species, with high-quality wood being common. One such example is the dimpled Dalbergia, with the finest quality coming from Mexico.
Recently, Lucerne Wood Industry in Yuzhu Wood Market purchased a batch of unfamiliar wood from Mexico, commonly referred to as “black rosewood.†This is a newly emerging wood species that is still under development and rarely seen in the domestic market. At this stage, it hasn’t been officially identified, so its Latin and scientific names remain unknown. However, its excellent material quality, warm color, and beautiful texture have attracted the attention of many furniture manufacturers, including those in Zhongshan and Shunde. Due to its similarity in appearance and properties to well-known black rosewood species like broad-leaved Dalbergia and East African black Dalbergia, it has been dubbed "Mexican black rosewood" by domestic traders.
So why did Lucerne Wood Industry choose this wood? The answer lies in its overall quality. When evaluating a wood species, factors like density, stability, texture, and color are crucial. Mexico’s “black rosewood†comes from the eastern part of the country, where the climate is ideal. It excels in all these aspects, giving it a strong competitive edge in the market.

Firstly, in terms of color, Mexican black rosewood differs from traditional red rosewood, which typically has a bright red hue. Instead, it features a deep purple-black color, similar to oxidized dimple Dalbergia. In the domestic market, consumers have long favored purple-black wooden furniture for its elegance and solemnity. The color of Mexican black rosewood aligns perfectly with this aesthetic preference, making it highly appealing to buyers.
Secondly, the texture plays a significant role in the visual appeal of any wood. A rich, flowing grain pattern enhances the decorative value of furniture. Mexican black rosewood has a dense, varied, and lively texture, adding an artistic touch to any piece it is used in.
Thirdly, its density is another key factor. As a premium hardwood, Mexican black rosewood has a high minimum air-dry density of 1.100g/cm³, far exceeding the national standard of 0.85g/cm³ for rosewood. Compared to other black rosewoods, which range between 0.83–0.98g/cm³, this makes it particularly valuable.
Fourthly, the oil content is excellent. Woods with good oiliness produce smooth, soft surfaces that feel pleasant to the touch, enhancing the overall user experience.
Lastly, its stability is remarkable. Mexican black rosewood is not prone to warping, cracking, or swelling, even without special treatment. This makes it easy to process and work with.
“We once cut a 2-meter-long log into a 2-meter-long board. The resulting plate was straight, without any deformation or cracks. That’s a clear demonstration of how stable this wood is,†said one merchant.
Considering all these qualities, Mexican black rosewood stands out in the market. It offers the best combination of density, texture, color, and oil content, making it an ideal choice for classical furniture. Especially with the current shortage of redwood resources, it is expected to become a popular alternative for furniture manufacturers.
However, only a few merchants are currently dealing with Mexican black rosewood. Most are testing the market cautiously and are hesitant to place large orders. Additionally, unlike other sources, Mexican black rosewood requires certification for export, making the process more complex and extending the time it takes to reach the domestic market. As a result, the overall cost remains relatively high.
“Although the cost is higher now, the quality is exceptional. As demand grows, more merchants will enter the market, and the cost will eventually decrease,†said a trader.
Currently, the Mexican black rosewood available in the market is mostly large in diameter, with most logs reaching about 40cm, and the smallest around 20cm. This results in a higher yield when processed into furniture, giving it a clear advantage in the market. However, as domestic interest increases, it may face a similar fate to dimpled Dalbergia, becoming rarer over time.
With the growing awareness among consumers and the increasing availability of precious redwood species, the acceptance of new wood types is rising. I believe that with its outstanding material quality, the future prospects for Mexican black rosewood are very promising.
