Many schools cannot afford this, leaving students without access to hands-on training.
Even when schools manage to purchase the equipment, there are other problems. The number of machines is usually limited, which means only a few students can use them at a time. There's also the risk of damage due to inexperienced handling, leading to costly repairs and maintenance. Additionally, the equipment is often underutilized, as it’s not feasible to integrate it into real-world production environments.
To address these challenges, researchers have proposed virtual training solutions, such as the Virtual Operating System (VOS) for CNC machining centers. This approach leverages virtual reality (VR) technology, which has been developing since the 1970s. VR was initially inspired by simulation-based training, such as flight simulators used in the 1940s. Although early simulators were complex and had limited functionality, they laid the foundation for today’s more advanced and user-friendly systems.
By using virtual training, students can gain practical experience without the risks and costs associated with real equipment. This not only improves learning outcomes but also makes vocational education more accessible and cost-effective. As technology continues to evolve, integrating VR into vocational training will play a key role in preparing students for the modern workforce.
