Packaging experts warn that environmental protection may not be safe

Food packaging talk about "plastic" color change, then paper packaging is environmentally friendly and safe? not necessarily! Recently, at a food packaging environmental protection and safety technology salon sponsored by the Guangzhou Association of Science and Technology and the Municipal Packaging Technology Association, the participating scholars pointed out that white carton boxes and paper cups may contain carcinogenic substances, while colored packaging conceal hidden dangers of heavy metal poisoning...

“Green food consumption has become a trend. However, it is extremely uncoordinated that many green foods do not use green packaging but use toxic and hazardous substances as packaging materials.” Dr. Li Huiyong, Guangzhou Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute Pointed out.

For example, a paper package that is generally regarded as more “green” does not mean absolute safety and environmental protection: some snow-white cartons and paper cups containing milk may contain carcinogenic substances because the fluorescent whitening agent used to whiten paper is a kind of Carcinogenic chemicals are very toxic to humans and animals. In addition, many companies to attract the attention of consumers, like to use colored wrapping paper packaging, resulting in lead-color inks and food "intimate contact"; some high-grade foods using tin foil packaging, part of the lead content in tin foil is seriously exceeded. Lead is recognized as the "killer" of acute and chronic heavy metal poisoning.

While harming human health, unscientific packaging materials and methods are also eroding the environment. According to the data provided by the China Packaging Federation, China's current packaging waste accounts for 10% of domestic household waste and 1/3 of urban solid waste. Many of these materials are refractory types.

He Zhengguo, director of Guangzhou People's Printing Factory, metaphor: "Each company produces 100,000 boxes of moon cake packaging, equivalent to cutting 4 to 6 trees with a diameter of 10 cm or more. The country produces more than 100 million boxes of moon cake every year, and it will 'eat' 6000. More trees!"

Scholars also pointed out that many companies ignore the issue of food packaging for economic purposes, but the facts show that packaging has become a new "green barrier" for China's export of food. At present, only the European Union’s trade barriers to China's food packaging have risen from several earlier items to dozens, and some of the exported foods have even encountered returns.
