Packing fruits and vegetables using nano-fresh-keeping cartons can extend their shelf life by more than 10 days. Recently, Hubei Zhihe Packaging and Printing Co., Ltd. announced that the first batch of nano-preservation carton packaging materials—developed through a collaboration with a South Korean technology partner—has successfully rolled off the production line. On December 5th, 100,000 square meters of custom-made products were delivered to Nanfeng Gongju in Jiangxi. This milestone marks Hubei Zhihe as the first domestic company to mass-produce nano-sized preservative cartons for fruits and vegetables.
According to Yu Hao, the general manager of Zhihe, in developed countries like the UK, the US, and Japan, fruits and vegetables undergo comprehensive post-harvest preservation treatments to maintain quality and minimize losses. As a result, the loss rate during processing and transportation is only 1% to 2%. In contrast, China's agricultural sector has long focused on pre-harvest cultivation while neglecting post-harvest preservation. It's estimated that over 80 million tons of fruits and vegetables rot annually, causing economic losses of around 75 billion yuan—nearly 30% of the industry's total output value.
Fresh-keeping packaging plays a vital role in preserving produce. Since 2009, Zhihe has introduced Korean technology and established the first large-scale nano-fresh packaging production line in the Dongbao Industrial Park. The nano-materials used in these cartons are chemically processed to the nanoscale, enabling them to absorb ethylene gas released by fruits and vegetables during respiration. This process significantly slows down their respiration rate, keeping them fresh for longer periods—up to one or two times longer than regular packaging.
The technology has now been patented and is entering full-scale production and application. With the successful commissioning of the project, Zhihe expects to produce 30 million square meters of nano-fresh-keeping cartons annually, marking a major step forward in China’s efforts to reduce food waste and improve post-harvest management.
