The first batch of nano fresh-keeping carton packaging materials in China successfully rolled out

Packing fruits and vegetables in nano-fresh-keeping cartons can extend their shelf life by over 10 days. Recently, Hubei Zhihe Packaging and Printing Co., Ltd. announced that the first batch of nano-preservation carton packaging materials—developed through a collaboration with a Korean technology partner—has successfully rolled off the production line. On December 5th, 100,000 square meters of customized products were delivered to Nanfeng Gongju in Jiangxi. This milestone marks Hubei Zhihe as the first domestic company to produce large-scale nano-preservative packaging for fruits and vegetables. According to Yu Hao, the company’s general manager, in developed countries like the UK, the US, and Japan, fruits and vegetables undergo comprehensive fresh-keeping treatments after harvesting to maintain quality and minimize losses. As a result, the loss rate during processing and transport is only 1% to 2%. However, in China, there has long been a focus on pre-harvest cultivation while neglecting post-harvest preservation. It's estimated that over 80 million tons of fruits and vegetables rot annually, causing economic losses of around 75 billion yuan—accounting for 30% of the industry's total output value. Fresh-keeping packaging plays a crucial role in reducing these losses. Since 2009, Zhihe has introduced Korean technology and established the first large-scale nano-fresh packaging production line in the Dongbao Industrial Park. The key component in the nano-fresh-keeping carton is a material that is chemically processed at the nanoscale. This material effectively absorbs ethylene gas, which is released by fruits and vegetables during respiration. By inhibiting this process, the freshness of the produce is significantly extended, with a preservation time one to two times longer than that of regular cartons. The technology has now been patented and is moving into full-scale production. With the successful commissioning of the project, Zhihe expects to reach an annual output of 30 million square meters of nano-fresh-keeping packaging for fruits and vegetables. This advancement not only supports sustainable agriculture but also helps reduce waste and improve food security across the country.
