The Secret Behind Amy Lau’s Artful Living World
Recognized globally as one of the most renowned designers, this New York-based interior designer shared with CovetED Magazine some exclusive insights (and secrets) about her illustrious career as an interior designer.

Her deep-seated passion for design , art , and craftsmanship has been a constant presence in her life since she was young. For many, finding a lifelong passion and purpose can be a long journey, but for Amy, this came naturally. “I’ve always loved anything related to objects and pieces, the stories they tell, their history, and the craftsmanship involved.†After completing her studies, Amy worked at the esteemed import-export store Antigua de Mexico, where she collaborated with various master artisans to craft exquisite pieces while simultaneously designing the retail displays to showcase these products. This period honed her skills in both artistry and interior design.

It was during her tenure as the Gallery Design Director for Lynne Weinberg that Amy realized she could venture out on her own. By that point, she had already curated exhibitions for several international shows, and people began reaching out to her for design advice. “I had so many inquiries about my work, and people were asking if I could design their spaces, so I decided to open my own practice in 2001.†Since its inception, Amy Lau Design has become synonymous with creating distinctive high-end interiors characterized by warmth, expressiveness , and meticulous attention to detail —a reputation that remains intact today.

Amy’s refined aesthetic marries art and design, bringing each personalized space to life with dynamic blends of vintage and contemporary pieces along with site-specific commissions . The inspirations vary from project to project, but the process always begins the same way. “I start building things up like a puzzle. I gather little pieces here and there, and as I understand them better, I create this environment for them on a higher level.â€

According to the interior designer , the key to crafting truly unique designs lies in having a passionate client eager to make history and deeply passionate about art. “They inspire me, but I’m able to transform those ideas into high-caliber interiors.†The relationship between client and designer becomes so personal that the project reflects their individual tastes and needs while pushing boundaries slightly. “You want to challenge them, encourage them to step out of their comfort zones just enough to see if they’ll embrace these risks.†This, she explains, is the essence of the ultimate artful living experience .

Amy’s portfolio boasts an array of luxurious residential interiors spanning the globe, making it hard to pinpoint one project that defines her career. “There are many projects I cherish, but this is the first apartment I’ve designed for myself. Every piece was stripped down to its core.â€

Nestled near the iconic Carnegie Hall , Amy’s apartment is her most cherished project thus far. Built in 1908/1910, the New York-based designer drew inspiration from global styles of that era, including steel and secessionist aesthetics. From the Chevron-patterned floors with walnut wood inlays to the secessionist-inspired lighting featuring plenty of glass, every element was meticulously crafted to perfection.

The firm's work has graced the pages of leading design publications like Architectural Digest, Elle Decor , and House Beautiful , earning numerous prestigious accolades, including the House Beautiful Next-Wave Award, Architectural Digest/AD 100 Award, ELLE Decor A-List , and the Luxe Interiors + Design Gold List . Among these achievements, one moment stood out above the rest.
“What truly marked my career was receiving my honorary doctorate from the New York School of Interior Design. It was humbling to see an educational institution recognize and honor my work—it was incredibly special. That remains one of my proudest moments.†– Amy Lau

Beyond her timeless interiors and bespoke product creations , Amy also authored a monograph in 2011 titled Expressive Modern: The Interiors of Amy Lau . This book delves into the historical influences shaping her work, featuring quotes from notable artists and designers. Many aspiring interior designers wonder how to build a successful studio like Amy Lau Design, and Amy shared her wisdom. “Mentorship is everything. I’ve had several mentors throughout my career who guided me to where I am today—there’s simply no substitute.â€

Now a seasoned mentor herself, Amy revealed that one of the biggest challenges she faces is the shift in how young professionals approach learning. Today, many young designers seek short-term experiences rather than committing to a longer apprenticeship. This makes the mentoring process more demanding.
“It’s tough on interior designers because we invest so much time training our employees, only to see them leave just as they’re becoming proficient. Mentorship involves exchanging ideas and learning from someone more experienced—it requires patience, dedication, and hard work. But it’s rewarding.†– Amy Lau

Currently, Amy is juggling multiple projects across the United States, particularly in New York and Connecticut . Looking ahead, she hinted at an upcoming book and a new space—an atelier/gallery where people can view her work and engage in creative brainstorming sessions. For Amy, her ultimate mission is to craft livable, meaningful homes filled with harmony, artistic integrity, beauty, and inspiration for every client and every space.
