SIG has developed Plasmax technology in 5 years

Swiss Packaging Group SIG Holding is in talks with the world's leading brewers on the use of its glass plastic bottle technology, which is said to extend the shelf life of beer.

On November 3, SIG announced the successful development of a new packaging that will extend the shelf life of PET-packaged beer to six months. This technology, called Plasmax, adds a thin transparent glass layer to the inner wall of the PET bottle, which reduces the amount of carbon dioxide leaked.

According to SIG, independent testing in Berlin has confirmed that Plasmax can maintain the taste and quality of PET bottled beer within six months.

A spokesperson for SIG said that beer is a very sensitive product. Beers packaged in PET bottles require barrier protection like Plasmax if they want to have a longer shelf life.

The spokesman said that SIG has spent 20 million euros and 5 years to develop this technology, and has already obtained contracts from the food industry. The SIG is eager for this technology to be applied in the beer brewing industry.

The spokesperson added that SIG has now conducted some small-scale tests in the Czech Republic and has already discussed with the global beer brewing giants, but he declined to disclose the name of the brewer who showed interest in the technology. .
