Many old basketball courts have undergone renovations, either being completely rebuilt or repurposed after repairs. Since each situation is unique, it's important to handle them individually.
When replacing an old court with a new one, the entire old surface should be removed to ensure a solid foundation. The site must be fully cleared before starting the compaction process from the base up, following the new construction design. It’s crucial not to leave any part of the old ground as a base and then build only half of the new structure. This can lead to cracks in the new plastic surface layer. Therefore, the old court should be completely removed, the base expanded, and a new plastic surface installed to avoid future issues.
Old asphalt and cement concrete courts should also be handled differently. If the old asphalt court has many cracks, the first step is to clean the joints thoroughly and apply bitumen mastic to seal them. For areas where the asphalt is severely damaged, those sections should be removed and replaced with new asphalt. After the repair, the surface should be cleaned, sprayed with a layer of adhesive oil, and finally covered with a new layer of asphalt.
For old cement concrete courts, all existing expansion joints should be removed, and the debris cleaned out before filling them with new joint materials. It’s recommended to apply a thin layer of asphalt emulsion on the old surface, followed by a layer of non-woven geotextile over the joints to prevent cracks from reflecting upward. Then, a final layer of asphalt concrete can be laid on top.
If the old cement brick or concrete court is less than 10 cm thick, it’s generally not advisable to use a paving method for a new plastic court. The original structure is too thin, and this often leads to cracking in the new surface. Many cases have shown that such practices result in poor performance and a shorter lifespan of the new court. Therefore, careful evaluation of the existing structure is essential before deciding on the renovation approach.
