Last July, Heavenly Agency reported on a startup named MatterFab, which is focused on creating an affordable metal 3D printer. The company claimed that its machine would be significantly cheaper than existing metal 3D printing solutions on the market—up to ten times less in cost. At the time, the company had not yet released the final prototype and said they planned to unveil their first test model at the start of this year.
However, it seems that MatterFab’s innovative technology has attracted considerable interest. On May 27, 2015, the company announced it had secured $5.75 million in Series A funding. This round was led by GE Ventures and the Innovate Indiana Fund. The money will be used to finalize the commercial development of their first industrial-grade metal 3D printer.
“Our goal is not just to solve the biggest challenges in current metal 3D printing, but to completely redefine what’s possible with metal additive manufacturing,†said Matt Burris, CEO of MatterFab. “To achieve this, we are collaborating with some of the most experienced users in the field to develop next-generation metal 3D printers.â€
When it comes to industry leaders in metal additive manufacturing, General Electric certainly stands out. Not only did GE invest in MatterFab, but it also appears deeply involved in the development of the company’s metal 3D printers. This partnership could bring significant technological advancements to the field.
Currently, metal 3D printers are expensive, often costing millions of dollars, and are mostly used by large corporations for prototyping or producing end-use parts. MatterFab’s technology, once launched, could disrupt this landscape by offering a more accessible solution. This would allow small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to shorten their supply chains, iterate faster, and reduce costs significantly.

MatterFab hasn’t just received support from GE and Innovate Indiana. They also got early backing from Lemnos Labs, a well-known hardware startup incubator.

Their open platform brings flexibility to 3D printing systems, which is exactly what GE and other industry leaders need to create functional metal parts for our customers.â€
