Many old basketball courts have been renovated or converted into new ones. Since each situation is unique, it's important to handle them on a case-by-case basis.
When replacing an old court with a new one, the entire existing surface should be completely removed. The foundation must be properly compacted, and the new structure should be built from scratch. It’s crucial not to leave any part of the old ground as a base, as this can lead to cracks in the new plastic surface layer. Retaining the old structure is not recommended; instead, the base should be expanded and a new plastic surface installed to ensure durability and stability.
Old asphalt and cement concrete courts should also be handled differently. For asphalt courts with many cracks, it’s essential to clean the joints thoroughly before applying bitumen mastic. Large damaged areas should be removed and replaced with fresh asphalt. After repairs, the surface should be cleaned, sprayed with a layer of tack oil, and then topped with a new layer of asphalt concrete.
For old cement concrete courts, all expansion joints should be removed, and debris cleared out. New joint materials should be filled in. It’s also advisable to apply an asphalt layer on the existing surface, followed by a layer of non-woven geotextile fabric over the joints to prevent cracks from reflecting up through the new surface. Finally, a layer of asphalt concrete is added for the final layer.
If the old cement brick or concrete structure is less than 10 cm thick, it’s generally not advisable to use a paving method to create a new plastic basketball court. The thin base may not support the new surface, leading to cracks and structural issues. This problem has occurred frequently in past renovations, so it’s better to avoid such practices when the original structure is too weak or thin.
In summary, proper preparation and treatment of the existing surface are key to ensuring a long-lasting and high-quality basketball court. Each type of court requires specific attention and techniques to maintain performance and safety for players.
