Nanjing University Academician Group publishes two Nature reviews in September

Academician Liu Zhihong from Nanjing University School of Medicine is an internationally renowned kidney disease expert and outstanding clinical medical scientist. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2003. Recently, his research group published a series of review articles that introduced the current status of kidney disease in China and the systematic biological research methods of primary glomerulonephritis. The relevant results were published in the September Nature Reviews Nephrology magazine.

In the first article "Nephrology in China", Academician Liu Zhihong introduced the status of kidney disease and treatment in China. This is the first time that Chinese kidney disease scholars have been invited to write an article to introduce the current status of kidney disease in China to the international academic community.

In the past 10 years, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease in China has been increasing, and the number of patients has exceeded 100 million. With the increasing incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, coupled with an aging population, the number of patients with chronic kidney disease will continue to increase.

The article pointed out that there are currently many challenges, such as the low rate of dialysis patients in many Western countries, and insufficient medical care in regions and populations. The Chinese Society of Nephrology (CSN) is working to promote the prevention of chronic kidney disease, as well as enhance early detection and treatment, in order to reduce and reduce the mortality and long-term burden of chronic kidney disease. In addition, kidney disease research has also developed rapidly, including basic research and clinical epidemiology research, and the Chinese Society of Nephrology has also strengthened communication and collaboration with other international kidney disease associations to promote the development of kidney disease research in China.

In addition, in the article "The primary glomerulonephritides: a systems biology approach", Liu Zhihong's research team collaborated with other research groups to elaborate the system biology research method of primary glomerular disease.

Primary glomerulonephritis is the most common glomerular disease, which can be clinically manifested as proteinuria, hematuria, edema, and hypertension. But each patient can show different degrees of severity. Many patients have edema as the first symptom. The mild patients only have slight swollen eyes and face in the morning, and slight edema of the lower limbs in the afternoon, which can disappear in a short time after rest.

For this disease, with the advancement of molecular technology, it is now possible to analyze genes and gene products in biological samples within the genome. However, most omics studies of primary glomerular diseases, except for large genomic studies, are limited by insufficient sample size and lack of specific data from kidney biopsy samples. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a standardized method. Conduct collaborative research.

By combining molecular data with clinical histopathology research results, the characteristics of these diseases will be fully and systematically resolved, and the diagnosis and treatment methods for these diseases are expected to be improved.
