Correlation analysis method: The total color difference, denoted as ΔE, is used to measure the perceptual difference between two colors. A positive ΔL indicates whitening, while a negative ΔL suggests darkening. A positive Δa means reddish tone, and a negative Δa indicates greenish hue. A positive Δb shows yellowish color, whereas a negative Δb points to bluish chromatic aberration.
In terms of ΔE values, a range of 0–0.25ΔE is considered very small or imperceptible, indicating an ideal color match. Between 0.25–0.5ΔE, the difference is minimal and acceptable for most applications. From 0.5–1.0ΔE, the difference is minor to moderate, and may be acceptable depending on the context. A ΔE value between 1.0–2.0 is considered moderate, and might be acceptable in specific industrial or commercial settings.
When ΔE ranges from 2.0–4.0, there is a noticeable color difference, and it may still be acceptable in some specialized applications. However, a ΔE of 4.0 or higher is generally considered very unacceptable in most cases, as the color variation becomes clearly visible to the human eye. Understanding these thresholds helps in evaluating color consistency across different materials, prints, or displays.
