Time is “quality,†not “quantityâ€
Throughout its history, Hermès has consistently demonstrated a deep appreciation for time through its mastery of mechanical artistry, advanced technology, and creative vision. The brand aims to challenge conventional perceptions of time by introducing the concept of “Time to Dream.†This philosophy encourages people to cherish moments rather than just count them. For Hermès, time is about quality — memories, happiness, and the beauty of life’s fleeting moments. Time can feel slow when we're happy or fast when we're sad, and the brand wants to give people the freedom to experience time on their own terms. By wearing a Hermès watch, individuals can take control of their time and embrace it with a sense of peace and purpose.
How to suspend time and space?
The first watch to embody the “Time to Dream†concept was the 2008 Cape Cod Grandes Heures. It offered an extraordinary mechanical experience, redefining how people perceive time. A few years later, in 2011, the Arceau Le Temps Suspendu was reintroduced as a complex timepiece that challenged traditional timekeeping. This watch allowed users to pause time temporarily — simply press the button at 9 o’clock, and the hour hand jumps to 12, while the calendar disappears. Time stands still, creating a dreamlike moment for the wearer. When they’re ready to return to reality, pressing the button again restores the hands to their correct positions, and time resumes its journey on the dial.
This year, Hermès launched a new complex timepiece called Dressage L’heure masquée, which took nearly two years to develop. Inspired by ancient timepieces like the Tuo table and wall clocks, this watch features only a minute hand on the dial, leaving the hour hand hidden. This design allows wearers to enjoy time without being constantly reminded of it. When you press the crown, the hour hand appears, along with a second time zone window at 6 o’clock. Letting go of the button makes everything disappear again, returning to a minimalist look. This subtle play with time creates a poetic, almost magical experience, where the act of guessing the time becomes part of the joy. Unlike the Arceau Le Temps Suspendu, which stops time, this watch puts time on hold — a different but equally meaningful interpretation of the “Time to Dream†concept.
Earn time
For Hermès, time is more than just a measurement — it's a relationship. The brand values craftsmanship and gives its artisans the time they need to create exceptional pieces. In today’s fast-paced world, Hermès seeks to redefine how people interact with time through the “Time to Dream†philosophy. It's about enjoying moments, dreaming, and even surprising yourself. Take the Dressage L’heure masquée, for example — it only shows part of the time, allowing wearers to feel like they've earned their moments. When you're busy all day, a quick click on the crown reveals what you’ve accomplished, giving a sense of accomplishment and surprise. Hermès doesn’t want people to be slaves to time; instead, it wants them to play with it, savoring the quality and joy of each moment. These watches offer a way to step out of time or simply capture the moments you value most — taking back control of your time, one wrist at a time.
