Simplified version of the Mountaineering Bible: Leadership

Leadership Governance (from pages 515-517)

Learn to be a leader

The responsibility of the leadership is a burden, but it is also a work that can yield great rewards. With the opportunity of leadership, the experienced climbers were able to impart the knowledge they had learned over the years: How to set a steady pace for the team? How to observe the terrain and select routes? How to deal with all kinds of hardships and dangers. Mountain climbing is because we love mountains. It is not necessary. The leader of mountaineering helps others to enjoy this kind of activity. The reward is satisfactory.

You may never have thought of playing this role, but as the experience grows, you have discovered that leading others is almost inevitable, but only to a degree. A climbing team naturally expects the most capable team members to give guidance, especially in times of crisis. Therefore, you should think in advance about what to do if you are suddenly placed in a heavy responsibility.

If you are longing for a leadership role, you should specifically look for opportunities to follow the competent leaders in your mind to go hiking together. Study them carefully; observe how they prepare for climbing activities, how to make decisions, and how to work with people. Please volunteer to provide your assistance so that you can participate in these matters. Experienced and wealthy leaders all said that they thought ahead of time in all matters and saw in advance the problems that might occur before they took precautions. This psychological pre-action exercise is a great training for future leaders. You should cultivate the habit of taking the whole mountaineering movement and the entire community into consideration, not just for the part of your participation. To have leadership thinking, this is the first step.

Observing everybody's respectful leader carefully will always yield something, but if you overreact, it may not be right. A group must believe that its leader is sincere, so everyone must cultivate his own style. Leadership is not necessarily simple, but it should be natural. If you are conservative, do not force yourself to be outgoing and lively. As long as there is skill, confidence, and sincere care for the well-being of the entire team, anyone can be a successful leader.

If you are the leader for the first time, you must choose a mountaineering activity that you can use to improve your ability. Maybe you can also invite a friend who you can trust and excellent to participate in. Spend more time preparing and ask those who are more experienced to provide advice. Be sure to authorize others so that you can use their skills; do not always emphasize that this is the first time you lead the team. This will only undermine everyone's confidence.

The first chapter of the mountaineering code is a good set of guidelines for you when making leadership decisions. It is intentional that these codes are conservative. Therefore, following these codes may sacrifice some opportunities for the summit, but they will never sacrifice their lives. Experienced and wealthy leaders may be able to correct some of these codes based on their own experience and still be able to ensure safety, but it is not possible to seriously deviate from them because these codes are specific norms for common sense in safe mountaineering.

Everyone is a leader

Each mountaineering team has a dual task: to allow the team to move toward the goal in a safe manner, and to unite the team, each player is a full-time partner in both tasks. In other words, everyone Take up the responsibility of the leader. The so-called personal leadership, for example, is to know the team's situation and progress; does anyone fall behind? Ask questions everywhere, cheer for others, and help. Everyone should participate in the decision-making process of the group. Everyone’s experience is an asset to the whole team, but if you don’t say it in your heart, it’s like an undeveloped source.

Creating a vibrating atmosphere is a very important job for leaders. The team members must know that their companions care about them and are willing to help them. You should actively participate in and be a part of the team: help with the camp, take the water, carry the rope, and ask people to share their own tips. Morale is intangible, but it will make a team more powerful. Morale is often a determinant of successful mountaineering, and it is often the decisive factor for a pleasant mountaineering journey, and morale affects everyone.

In any case, as long as the players are dispersed, the strength of the mountaineering team will weaken. Try to be vigilant and see where your companions are, and treat them as if they are their own. If you go forward with a forward, don't forget to look back from time to time. If you are walking in front of the team, stop and let everyone catch you. Then kindly point them out and let them take a breath before moving on.

Also participate in finding the path. Study the mountain guides and grounds carefully so that you will be familiar with the route to the destination and the climbing route. If everyone actively participates in the march, the chances of losing the team will be much less. Always consider the use of maps, compasses, and route descriptions as your own responsibility, so that you can know what you are and where you are.

You also have to take responsibility for your knowledge, skills and preparation. Before you invest, explore the trip and make sure the event is within your reach. Supplies and equipment should be prepared; if you doubt the suitability of the climb or what you should bring, ask beforehand. Whenever you feel that something cannot be dealt with, you must tell it. The hardest part of the road is best to ask for help, or even to give up not to climb, but it is better than to have a crisis. Think of the community and its well-being, and your contribution in this area is tied to your preparation for leadership—perhaps it is your best preparation.
