Application of Green Building Plastics and Its Development Trend

The concept of green materials was first proposed in 1988 at the first International Conference on Materials Science. In 1992, the international academic community defined green materials as the materials that have the least environmental burden on the earth and are not harmful to human health in the links of raw material adoption, product manufacturing, application process, and recycling after use. The principle that people form a consensus on the comparison of green buildings is that green buildings should include five aspects: the occupant’s health, energy efficiency, resource efficiency, environmental responsibility, and affordability. Among them, the release of pollutants, the internal consumption of materials, the design heat loss of buildings, the recycling of materials, the impact on water quality and air, etc., are all problems that green building plastics should solve.
The plastics consumed by construction industry all over the world are about 10 million tons per year, accounting for a quarter of the world's total plastic production, ranking first in applied plastics. Plastics have been included in the four major building materials together with cement, steel, and wood. The reason for the rapid development of construction plastics is not only the excellent performance of the products themselves, but also the substantial reduction in the area of forests, the enhancement of human protection and eco-environmental awareness, and the country’s protection policies for forest resources, land resources, and water resources. Obviously, the energy consumption for the production and use of construction plastic products is much lower than other building materials. For example: The energy consumption of PVC production is only 1/5 of steel and 1/8 of aluminum. PVC pipe is used to save 62-75% of water energy than steel pipe, and it is used to save 55-68% of energy than cast iron pipe. Plastic doors and windows can save 30-50% of heating and air conditioning energy consumption. Therefore, the promotion and application of building plastics has become an important trend in the development of today's building technology, and is increasingly valued by design and production departments and users. At the same time, the varieties that cause damage to the environment during production and use are gradually being eliminated.
In recent years, China's plastics, doors, windows, pipes, paints, waterproof materials, and decoration materials, etc., have achieved rapid development in building-related plastics. This is due to the national economic management departments (Ministry of Construction, Economic and Trade Commission, Quality Supervision Bureau, and building materials). Bureau stipulates that the use of galvanized steel pipes, cast iron pipes, steel windows, paper tar tar mats, etc. shall be prohibited or restricted in the express provisions, and the use of new materials shall be supported. On the other hand, the product performance in these areas has been greatly improved and accepted by users.
During the “Tenth Five-Year Plan” period, the country in the construction field will focus on the development of chemical building materials, actively develop research supporting products and application technologies, and spare no effort to pay close attention to promotion and application. Plastic doors and windows: The output will reach 4,000-45 million square meters, accounting for more than 80% of the total number of doors and windows in the country. The emphasis will be on the promotion and application of heating in the north of the Three Gorges and the coastal areas, especially in the development of the western region.
Plastic Pipes: The output of various types of plastic pipes will reach 500,000 tons or more, accounting for more than 50% of all types of pipe applications in the country. The focus is on the development and application of UPVC pipes and PE pipes. In the drainage pipes and rainwater pipes of new urban dwellings, cast iron pipes are basically eliminated.
New waterproof material: focus on the development of modified asphalt linoleum, actively develop polymer waterproofing membranes, appropriately develop waterproof coatings, and strive to develop sealing materials and plugging materials, so that the total amount of new waterproof materials in the national waterproof project reaches over 50% Among them, the annual output of coils reached 145 million square meters, and the annual output of coatings and sealing materials reached 300,000 tons.
Architectural Coatings: The annual output will reach 1 million tons, focusing on the development of exterior wall decorative coatings and supporting large-scale enterprises with an annual output of 10,000 tons or more with self-innovation mechanisms.
Thermal insulation materials: The annual output of various types of mineral wool, glass wool, and foam plastics reaches approximately 700,000 tons. The focus is to promote the promotion and application of new environmental protection and heat insulation materials in buildings, so that the total amount of insulation materials used in construction accounts for the total amount of thermal insulation materials. The application volume has increased from the current 15% to 35%.
Architectural decoration materials: Focus on the development of acrylic latex series interior and exterior wall coatings, composite wood flooring and other marketable products, toward the development of multi-functional, high-quality, pollution-free, to be new, beautiful, practical, convenient, so that The output value of decorative materials reached 200 billion yuan.
Foreign industrial developed countries attach great importance to the research and development of green building plastics. In recent years, some new plastic building materials products have been developed. For example, a real estate development company in the United Kingdom has developed a method for converting polystyrene waste into man-made wood.
The method is to first crush, mix and heat 85% of the waste polystyrene, and then add 4% talc as a reinforcing agent and nine kinds of additives to process into imitation wood products. Its appearance, strength and performance and other aspects can be compared with the pine wood. This material is said to have been used in residential construction. The Finnish National Technical Research Center released a message saying: The Finnish plastic board company has successfully used plastic liquefaction technology for the recycling of plastic waste and obtained a patent. This technology can liquefy plastic waste that has not been categorized and cleaned to produce alternatives for asphalt and is used for paving roads. It is therefore called plastic asphalt. The biggest feature of plastic asphalt is its good flexibility, cold resistance, shock resistance and low cost compared to ordinary asphalt. It has now entered a large-scale trial phase.
China is a country with a shortage of resources. The development of green building plastics has specific economic and social significance.
In recent years, domestic green building plastics have been greatly developed, showing a good development trend. Non-toxic, harmless, non-polluting plastic building materials will be the hot spot of market demand in the 21st century.
