Emerging network printing services should find emerging demand objects

The digital printing revolution, fueled by e-commerce and mobile technology, has dramatically reshaped the modern printing industry. One of the most significant trends is network printing, which has captured a substantial portion of the fast graphic printing market. As a result, many traditional fast-printing businesses are now exploring network-based solutions to adapt and evolve. In the early 1980s, I began my career as an engineer at United Daily News in Taiwan, working on a computerized typesetting system for Chinese newspapers. At that time, the transition to automation was just beginning. The computers were massive—larger than home refrigerators—and lacked even basic features like Chinese fonts or graphical capabilities. Their processing power was far inferior to today’s smartphones. Computer typesetting had already been in use in Europe and the U.S., where early font systems were developed by manufacturers of typesetting machines. These fonts were designed with aesthetics in mind, focusing on the visual appeal of text rather than functionality. The glyphs used in design or management procedures were entirely different from those used in typography. For Chinese typesetting, the United Daily News team took an innovative approach. They printed the characters on paper, then enlarged them through photography, scanned them into image data, and applied mathematical algorithms to define their shapes. Each character was assigned a unique code for input and output, forming the basis of early Chinese font files. Not only did they create fonts for various newspapers, but they also invited a Ph.D. specializing in Chinese characters to refine the strokes using traditional methods. This work laid the foundation for computer typesetting in China. A few years later, several companies in Taiwan emerged, all led by former employees of United Daily News. These firms invested heavily in font development, but most engineers focused solely on the need for fonts in typesetting software. Few considered broader applications of these fonts beyond the publishing world. By 1995, the rise of desktop publishing tools like PageMaker, QuarkXPress, and Microsoft Word changed the game. These programs shifted the workflow from typesetting to direct printing, forcing many computer typesetting companies to either close or pivot their business models. However, the font industry remained strong, with companies like Huakang, Monotype, and Wen Ding continuing to thrive well into 2013, offering high-value font solutions. As technology advanced, every computer came equipped with built-in fonts. In the printing industry, this shift made the font business less prominent. But with the rise of mobile devices, smart TVs, and wearable tech, the demand for fonts has only grown. Companies that once specialized in Chinese fonts now find themselves in a lucrative global market. In the publishing and printing industry, some suppliers can provide both fonts and typesetting software. However, their success depends on how well they understand market needs. While "every computer needs a Chinese font" is a broad and growing market, "every publishing house needs typesetting software" is more niche. This distinction highlights the importance of vision and adaptability. The digital transformation of the printing industry has been ongoing for decades, and the spread of digital printing machines has become widespread. Online printing platforms are now common, raising questions about how traditional printing will evolve in the face of new technologies. How should we accurately predict the future of this industry? Emerging network printing companies must think carefully about their place in this evolving landscape. Traditional print shops are experimenting with new service models, such as online ordering and e-book production. Meanwhile, new services like quote-focused websites, business card printing sites, and personal publishing platforms are emerging. These innovations could become standard practices or serve as cautionary tales for others entering the market. Is it enough to have a "vision" and wait for time to prove its value? Or is "reasonableness" the key factor in determining success? If today's emerging printing services are still being served by hundreds of existing printing plants in Taiwan, then they’re not truly "emerging." If there’s no real new demand, the competition becomes fierce, with billions of players vying for a small slice of the market. Large printing groups with high turnover and elite teams capable of handling thousands of orders each day make it difficult for new entrants to find profitable niches. Despite years of effort, many professional printing factories in Taiwan are still searching for a clear direction. The future of the printing industry is uncertain, but one thing is clear: adaptability, vision, and a deep understanding of market needs will determine who thrives in this ever-changing landscape.
