Focus: see how stone becomes paper

Stone paper is a new material between paper and plastic. From the perspective of replacing the traditional part of the paper, it can save a lot of forest resources for the society, and can reduce the secondary pollution generated in the papermaking process; from the perspective of replacing the traditional part of the plastic packaging, it can save the country a lot of strategic resources oil . However, some experts have questioned whether it can be truly degraded. As an emerging thing, stone paper moves forward in the dispute.

What is stone paper
Stone paper is also called Shike paper. It is based on limestone mineral resources with large reserves and wide distribution (calcium carbonate content reaches 70-80%) as the main source, and uses polymer as auxiliary material (content is 20-30%). The principle of polymer interface chemistry and the characteristics of polymer modification, after special processing, are made by polymer extrusion and blow molding processes. It is a variety of processed paper. Stone paper has the same writing performance and printing effect as plant fiber paper, and also has the core performance of plastic packaging.
What contribution to environmental protection
Protect resources and save energy. Stone paper comes from mines, does not need to cut down vegetation, it is a great protection for the forest. The production process of stone paper mainly uses calcium carbonate as the main raw material. The whole production process does not need to add a drop of water, saving precious water resources. At the same time, the energy consumption is lower than traditional wood pulp and paper, which helps to improve global warming and other problems caused by carbon dioxide
Reduce pollution emissions. The production of stone paper does not require washing with water at all, nor strong acids, alkalis and bleach, so there is no problem of wastewater discharge and no pollution of water resources.
Recycling and degradation. Stone paper can be recycled through plastic products after use, crushed and squeezed after collection, and can be used to produce colored plastic bags, flower pots, plastic barrels, etc.
If it is treated as garbage and sent to an incinerator for combustion, it will not produce toxic gas. Because stone paper contains a large amount of stone powder and a small amount of non-toxic resin, when the resin burns, the stone powder will pulverize, promote the contact between the resin and the air, and accelerate the complete burning of the resin, so no black smoke will be generated due to the lack of oxygen and smoldering during combustion. There is no toxic exhaust gas after the non-toxic resin is burned, and the emission of carbon dioxide is small.
What are the characteristics of the production process
The process of stone paper mainly uses the combination of calendering and casting, and the organic base material basically uses polyethylene-PE and polypropylene-PP. The combination of calendering and casting replaces the traditional paper process, which is more suitable for the processing of polyethylene, the product performance has been improved, and the product production range is wider. The use of improved special equipment to complete the production of such paper can simplify the production process of stone paper, make the quality more stable, and make the operation more convenient.
Stone paper also has its unique advantages in use and printing. Its main characteristics are not only waterproof, anti-fog, anti-oil, anti-insect, etc., but also resistant to tearing and folding. Stone paper absorbs ink well, and inkjet printing is not easily eroded. Because it is fiber-free, the resolution after inkjet printing is higher, and there is no film on the surface, and there will be no chemical interaction with the ink, resulting in color shift and decolorization.
In daily life, stone paper is widely used, not only can replace traditional charcoal paper, but also has good water resistance, good foldability, and easy binding. Can replace opaque PVE, PE and other plastic films, reducing costs, suitable for disposable bags and other disposable products.
What is the future
The application fields of stone paper products are extremely wide and can be applied to the following industries.
One-time life consumables. Such as garbage bags, shopping bags, food bags, compact bags, lunch boxes, foot gloves, tablecloths, raincoats, dust covers, etc.
Cultural paper. Such as printing paper, writing paper, advertising decoration paper, Dowling paper, coated paper, film paper, drawing paper, posters, typing paper, mailing paper, cigarette paper, glassine paper, newsprint, etc.
Building materials decoration and industrial packaging. Such as decorative wallpaper. In the field of industrial packaging, it can be used in fertilizer bags, cement bags, rice noodle bags, clothing bags, various handbags, carton cartons, etc .; it can also be used in special paper, such as paper for field work, paper for underwater work Under-mine operation paper, military special paper, etc.
With the continuous maturity and upgrading of stone papermaking technology, the application field will also expand. At the same time, because stone paper uses low-cost ore powder as the main raw material, the cost is 20% to 30% lower than traditional paper, and the price is also 10% to 20% lower. It has a strong market competitiveness.
Why is it controversial
While receiving praise, some experts believe that although the production process of stone paper is low-carbon and energy-saving, as a new thing, whether it is truly environmentally friendly is still worth discussing.
First of all, the raw materials of stone paper are mainly calcium carbonate and high molecular polymers based on petroleum. For the consumption of nearly 90 million tons of paper products in China, it is obviously a waste of resources. In addition, scientific experiments have shown that it takes at least two to three hundred years for general plastics to degrade into harmless and less harmful fragments. Therefore, stone paper cannot be completely recycled and degraded. And renewable plant resources such as wood, reeds and more than 60% of plant fiber paper using waste paper as raw materials are easy to recycle and degrade.
Secondly, in terms of product performance, stone paper needs to be added with polyethylene to make composite paper, similar to an ultra-thin "plastic paper". In comparison, traditional plant fiber paper has good absorption, breathability, and printability. It can be converted into pulp after blistering, and it is also easy to degrade under natural conditions. These characteristics are not possessed by airtight stone paper.
Thirdly, in terms of technology, China has accumulated rich experience in papermaking for thousands of years. Modern technology has made the production process less and less polluting the environment, and large-scale enterprises have reached environmental protection standards. The use of calcium carbonate as a filler in the paper industry has a long history, and the current paper products have been used up to nearly 20%. Therefore, the use of calcium carbonate as an ingredient in paper is not an innovation.
